Kinja'd!!!

2001 GMC Suburban  Yukon XL 1500.

I’d been needing a truck of sorts more and more frequently. Had been looking for full size pickups when I remembered just how useful my old Suburban was.

Picked this up for $3400. It has 147,000 miles on the odometer, rides wonderfully and room for everybody! I had forgotten how nice it is to have a v8. The 5.3 is so quiet and smooth at idle and pulls this behemoth almost effortlessly.

Won’t be using it all that much after the honeymoon period so I hopefully won’t see this all too often.

Kinja'd!!!

Urph. And gas is cheap now!!!

Some more pics.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

“What’s that black rectangle thing near the bottom? “ You ask.

“That’s the WORKING TAPE DECK!”

I knew I kept those for a reason. * !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! *

The tape deck is nice and all, but my favorite feature is the barn doors. I hate the newer style hatchback style rear doors.

Talk about cheap gas. Cost’s me over $50 CDN to fill my Cobalt.

Great buy! I used to have an ‘05 3/4 ton Yukon XL, was totally awesome. The 8100 was a little disappointing though, and in retrospect I would have been fine with a 1/2 ton and the 5.3.

Kinja'd!!!

With the 35 (36?) gallon tank I have spent over $100 on a fillup. But it was good for 3-4 weeks of basic commuting!

Nice ride. I own a 2001 Tahoe, really like that body style. I got the tape deck too. It was never used until I bought it. (Parents didn’t have a need for it) I’m glad I never threw out my old tapes.

Somehow there are very few cracked plastic components either. Just the left most air vent directional control.

Weird thing that must have something to do with materials, but it smells exactly like my 1994 Caprice I used to have.

Around here too. Just got lucky(I hope) finding a dealer in the boonies.

I looked at few around this price and higher and this one was nicer than some of the 5k+ ones.

I’m used to Big block Buick motors with gobs of low end torque. The big block chevy motor really needed to rev to make it’s power and I didn’t like it. Pulling a big camper trailer up hills you had to make it scream and I hated it. My understanding is that there were a lot of mods available to the intake and exhaust that would let it breathe better, but still for the towing beast it should have been, when you put a big load on it it really fell on it’s face.

FWIW my old 3/4 ton suburban had it’s small block chevy swapped out for a 455 Buick, then a 500" cadillac motor...

That’s not even that bad. I have a cracked vent in the 4Runner. took it out, very carefully glued it back together. Let it sit out for a week to make sure it didn’t smell like glue. And some stupid idiot broke it again putting it back in. Oh wait. That was me.

How do you define screaming? The couple 3/4tons we have at work with the 8100 are my second favourite vehicles to drive at work. Put your foot down at any speed and its thrust for days, even with a 7000lb trailer behind the crew-cab long-bed, going up a 7% grade. Don’t recall ever even breaking 4000rpm with a load on either.

$57 is usually about what it costs to fill my Jeep from 1/3 of a tank... And considering the entire tank only holds 23gal... But the US presidential candidates this year are making me happy to be in this great white frozen wasteland where fuel costs a lot but not as much as in Europe.

The idiot race is probably going to result in the price of everything going up. A lot. Pretty soon you’ll be trading your wives and daughters for a few gallons of fun juice.

Well okay probably not. But it’s almost imaginable.

Pulling a 26' travel trailer on I-75 ended up in 2nd gear with my foot to the floor to hold 50 MPH or so on the uphills (when everybody else is tearing by at 75 MPH). Couldn’t hold speed in 3rd gear. It wasn’t bad for light loads, pulling a flatbed car trailer was easy work. But it was a real dog with the travel trailer. Mine also had 3.56 gears, a lot of the pickups got 4.10s which made it easier to haul heavy.

Kinja'd!!!1

Great! My ‘86 made it to 330,000 miles, not bad for a new england truck. But the floor was completely swiss cheese and I didn’t have the means to save it. The drivetrain was still solid as hell.

10/17/2016 at 23:34

Kinja'd!!!1

Mm. Yeah, that’ll be it, the 4.10's I’m guessing. Travel trailers also generate a lot more drag than anything I would have been pulling. I was mostly hauling construction supplies, but they mainly get used for pulling around skid steers and other smaller equipment like that, or we’ve used them to rescue other broken-down vehicles to bring home to the fleet garage. My only complaint is how long the crew-cab long-bed is.

This went with only 130K on it. :(

Oil pump decided to quit and I failed to notice the drop in oil pressure.

Kablooie!

Mechanically(up to that point) it was sound. The interior was damn near immaculate and it was loud as fuck with the flowmasters I had put on. Just the body itself was kinda ugh.

Yeah the travel trailer I hauled was not aerodynamic at all, it was like towing a giant brick. But it did okay holding 70-75 mph on the flatter parts - it was the mountains in KY on I-75 where it really showed how little guts it had for pulling something heavy on long grades.

Nice! I had a black one, same year, model, and barn doors. Also had the tape deck, which I replaced with a satellite radio thingy at the time. Loved that thing, never had so much as a hiccup from about 80k to 120k. I wish I could just stash it away for the 5 times a year where I really could use something that big.

I worked for a marina back then and I towed with it a lot. Very capable, as you’d imagine.
